- Tretinoin cream is an unlicensed medicine in the UK.
- It may only be prescribed for an individual patient’s genuine special clinical need where no suitable UK-licensed medicine is available.
- It must be prescribed for a medical purpose only and not solely for cosmetic or aesthetic use.
- Tretinoin is a vitamin A derivative. Prescribers must consider current BNF and Martindale safety guidance.
- It is contraindicated during pregnancy and when planning pregnancy because a risk of birth defects cannot be excluded.
- Counsel patients about skin irritation, possible photosensitivity and appropriate sun protection.
